The ICC World Twenty 20 is the international championship of Twenty20 cricket organized by International Cricket Council (ICC). The first season of the championship was held in September 2007 at South Africa.It is expected to be held once in every two years. The tournament consists of 12 teams. All test playing nations gets a direct entry in the tournament. The remaining places are filled by the finalists of the 2007 Worled Cricket League (WCL) Division One tournament. In 2007 the WCL was a 50-Over format league. It will be a 20-Over format in 2009. 2007 ICC World Twenty20 : 2007 ICC World Twenty 20 was the inaugural World Twenty 20 championship. It was held in South Africa from 11th-24t September 2007. India won the championship by defeating Pakistan in the finals. The 12 teams were divided into four groups as follows | Group A | Group B | Group C | Group D | | South Africa Bangladesh West Indies | Australia England Zimbabwe | SriLanka New Zealand Kenya | India Pakistan Scotland | The top two teams fron each group qualified to play in the Semi Finals. Which was again divided into two groups of 4 teams. Group E | Group F | India New Zealand South Africa England | Pakistan Australia Sri Lanka Bangladesh | The Final match was played between India and Pakistan. India won the match and the was the first ever ICC World Twenty20 Champions. 2009 ICC World Twenty20 : 2009 ICC World Twenty20 is the second ICC world Twenty 20 Championship. It is scheduled to take place at England in June 2009. 12 teams will be playing the tournament. The groups were revealed on 31 October 2007, based on finishing positions at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the successful qualifying associate nations The 4 Groups are | Group A | Group B | Group C | Group D | Bangladesh India Ireland | Pakistan England Netherlands | SriLanka Australia West Indies | New Zealand South Africa Scotland | Thr rest of the game format will be same as 2007 with top 2 teams from each groups to reach semifinals. And then a knock out format to decide the two finalist. The final match is scheduled to take place on 21st june at Lord’s London.
